Opossum Repellents
While opossums are not typically soup setting to a
yard as several other wildlife, seeing them within
the region can be distressing, as they could grow
very large. These pouched mammals are meat eaters,
so they are just equally happy consuming garden
veggies, pet left outside homes or garbage left
inside an open can during the night. Instead of
harming these possums, inhibiting their attendance
around plants in the garden through the use of
repellents would lead them towards foraging
elsewhere. Natural opossum repellent techniques
are harmless to animals and plants. Several
approaches may be utilized or mixed for greater
effectiveness. You can easily buy Florida possum
repellent online or in stores. In fact, you can
even make your own repellent! Here are some
examples:
Garlic spray
This is a repellent that touches on both smell and
taste. Simply place 30 grams of freshly minced
garlic in a liter of warm water. Add 30 grams of
newly crushed hot chili, stir and allow it to
infuse overnight. The next day, you may spray it
on the foliage. It is suggested that this be done
bimonthly and after each time it rains.
Hot foodstuff
Spicy mixes also work as Florida opossum
repellents, as well as work finely in keeping away
other plot eaters, like squirrels and rabbits.
Mixing garden fresh bits of garlic in water,
besides spraying it around the garden, helps
maintain possums off the area. Hot sauce or
peppers mixed together with a bit of dish soap and
water, once applied on the plants will repel the
opossum with its taste.
Indonesian fish sauce taste repellent
Place a tablespoon of patis or fish sauce inside a
liter of water. Then, spray the mixture on the
plant leaves.
Molasses
220 grams of molasses mingled and dispersed in 4 ¼
cups of water provides a feasible possum
repellent. This is especially true on Florida
possums that are attracted to green garden plants.
A spray of dish soap fluid in the mixture helps
the blend to stick on plant foliage. This
combination, sprayed on the fresh greenery growth,
holds back possums from chewing on the vegetation.
Mothballs
Mothballs, intended to drive away moths from
munching stored fabric, are likewise disagreeable
to opossums. Fragrant naphthalene minerals are
finest for boosting possums towards evacuating a
closed area, like underneath the porch or inside a
crawlspace.
Quassia pieces
Quassia, a Southern American sapling, is vended in
fragmented bark mode in plant centers. This tree
bark exists as an important ingredient in numerous
commercial repellents for Florida possums. Just
heat around four ounces of quassia chips inside
almost two liters of water above low fire for 60
minutes or more like making soup or
tea.Afterwards, strain the mix into a spray bottle
while adding some dish washing soap. Then, spray
the mixture to the young leaves of plants to hold
back the possums.
Sprinkler
Technology participates in being a repellent for
Florida opossums. Being nocturnal, they do their
activities in the evening, which is the reason we
frequently do not see them. A sprinkler activated
by motion can sense prowling opossums and
surprises them through an unanticipated stream of
water.
Tea-based taste deterrent
Boil water of around two liters, add Lapsang
Souchong tea of around 60 grams, and leave the
blend to chill at room temperature or inside the
fridge. Then, strain the liquid, as well as apply
directly on plants using a plastic squirt bottle.
Reapply after every 14 days and after whenever it
rains. Make sure to use a newly brewed mixture
each time. Take note that Florida possum
repellents work by way of two senses,
specifically, taste and smell. Furthermore, some
of these repellents stay designed towards
repelling for their feel in the mouth. Many
ingredients have been utilized in the likelihood
that they stop opossums from eating plants in the
garden. Sadly, there still is no definitive
successful, general repellent that would
consistently discourage possums from munching on
plants.Others assert that they had tried all
suggested repellents, but nothing stopped their
vegetation from being consumed by possums.
In fact a study was conducted at the Deakin
University on 14 unproven Florida opossum
repellents. It disclosed that when hungry opossums
attack the plants with the repellents, none of the
taste repellents stopped the possums. On the other
hand, half of the odor repellents seem to hold
some validity. It was also noted that compounds
dissolved in water remain likely towards being
removed through rain, and therefore, requires
reapplication after the rain. And just as a
precautionary measure, it is sensible to try-out
any product on a tiny plant part, to ensure no
possible damage may occur to the vegetation,
before spreading it over generally.
